Ana is the love of Drake Merlin’s life. The woman he wants to grow old with, share every experience. But there is a hitch that is preventing them from obtaining their happily ever after….
Ana might be perfect for him, but she is dying.
Diagnosed with a rare disease, there is no cure for what ails her. At least, not in the 21st century. But first he must help the rest of humanity. Drake is revived one more time to fight an alien race who is hell bent on destroying the Solar System. Wow! This was a great book. A love story spanning 100s of billions of years and 100s of billions of individuals contributing to the story. In finishing the book, I feel like I've lost a friend.
This story is pure what-if, a romp around some possible futures. No character growth or relationships, but a good story none the less. I didn't, however, like the conclusion of the story.
scifi at its best. A trip to the far distant future by one man who holds it in his hands to save the universe. How could you not like a book like that
It was an excellent book. I enjoyed all the paths and Drake's humanity remained the same. The science was great.
This book shows why the late Charles Sheffield is one of the best hard SF writers of the 20th century and beyond.
At its heart this book is a love story about a man who will do anything to get back the love of his life - even if this means he must journey to the end of the universe and beyond. But it is also a hard SF masterpiece that stretches your imagination to its elastic limit without playing fast and loose with real science.
Most highly recommended.

I do not like the concept of digital life. I can not conceive that humor would still exist.
This book is amazing, reminding me slightly of 'Last And First Man' by Olaf Stapledon and also 'The Time Machine' by H.G. Wells. It's not just a science fiction book, but a book about the human spirit, the human soul, the human mind. Yes, it has aliens, and strange planets, and mankind's many different forms in the future, but at a certain point it goes beyond the hard science to explore our dreams and what the future may bring. Love and death, waste and power, peace and war. No matter what body we may create, no matter what mind we may think in, no matter how we evolve, we can't give up. We may give up our forms and even link our minds, but in the end we are all searching for something that only WE need and only WE can understand. Drake is after something that is special only to him.
Yes, there are a few weak ideas, like when future man turns to Drake for help, because thy don't know how to fight against an 'alien menace'. Yet I found it funny, and even refreshing, because Drake was just as useless when it came to fighting a war as they were. My only complaint is that after 387 pages the ending was also kind of weak. I wanted something more, something solid. Not a re-read, if you get my drift. Check it out of the library or get a used copy.
